Tribute to Chris Ware

My collaboration on the passtimes section of Ling Magazine -which I named "Landing" = L & Ing-, was ended this past Octuber, 20 issues after, and doing a summing-up of the works I did for the mag, I find one I dedicated to Mr.Ware a while ago. I didn't show it here yet and, if I'm not wrong, this work isn't on my website either. Taking advantage of The Acme Novelty #19 (the best Ware's issue?) is hitting the stores now, I thought it was an opportune time to show it. Besides, I'm very fond of it. As fas as I remember I had a week to hand in the assignment, so in the rush I forgot to mention Chris Ware somewhere on the pages. A mistake I want rectify with this post now.

Mi colaboración en la sección de pasatiempos -y que bauticé como Landing=L & ing-, de la revista Ling terminó este mes de Octubre después de 20 números y, haciendo un repaso de algunos de estos trabajos, recordé que hace algún tiempo le dediqué a Mr.Ware uno de ellos. Todavía no lo había mostrado en este blog y, si no recuerdo mal, este trabajo tampoco está en mi web. Aprovechando que recientemente a salido The Acme Novelty #19, he pensado que era un buen momento para hacerlo ahora. Se trata de uno de los Landings por los que siento más cariño. Sin embargo, debido a las prisas (una semana para realizar el trabajo), olvidé mencionar a Chris Ware en alguna parte. Algo que pretendo enmendar ahora con este post.

Well, in this case, I decided to do a comic page instead, and I put the text of the passtimes in the character's speech bubbles, instead of a matching text. I was trying to confuse the reader before he realized the "trick". I hoped also he devoted a little of his precious time to read the story underlying the panels.

Pero en este caso decidí tratarlo como una página de cómic y puse el texto de los pasatiempos en los globos de los personajes, en lugar de de un texto que le correspondiera lógicamente. Pretendía crear en el lector un poco de confusión antes de que se diera cuenta del "truco". Tenía la esperanza también de que dedicara una pequeña parte de su precioso tiempo para leer la historia que subyacía en la viñetas.

I tried the panels told a story that in anyway was intelligible for the reader without needing of a logical text. The story must be very simple, of course:

A crying child says to his mother that his favorite doll is broken. Mother tries to comfort him then. In the evening she come back home and gives a present to his son: it's about a new modern version of the original broken doll. Child doesn't like it (since it's not the same doll actually) and he run along. In order to give a more dramatic sense of the matter, I reduce all the new version's changes on the doll to an only, huge smile.

Para que tuviera un poco de gracia, intenté que las viñetas contaran una historia que, de algún modo, se pudiera entender sin necesidad de un texto lógico que lo acompañara. La historia claro tenía que ser muy sencilla:

El niño llorando le dice a su madre que su muñeco preferido se ha roto, la madre intenta consolarlo. Al caer la noche, ella regresa a casa y le trae un regalo: se trata de una nueva versión, mucho más moderna, del muñeco roto. Al niño no le gusta (puesto que en realidad no es el mismo muñeco) y se va corriendo. Para dar un aspecto más dramático al asunto, reduje el cambio a una única y enorme sonrisa en el muñeco.

I intended to use some characteristic Ware's graphic and literary devices in just two pages.
In the end, mother mends the broken doll -the genuine one!:

Mi intención fue siempre usar algunos de los recursos gráficos y literarios que caracterizan el trabajo de Ware.
Al final la madre repara el muñeco roto:

There was a critic vision of the present times underlying the story. I think this feeling I identify with covers all the Ware's work. This could be likely a misreading of mine, of course. You know, we hardly ever aren't safe from our own weaknesses...

Había una visión crítica sobre los tiempos modernos en la historia. Creo que este es un sentimiento que recorre toda la obra de Ware. Esto, claro, podría ser una mala interpretación por mi parte. Ya sabéis, casi nunca estamos a salvo de nuestras propias debilidades...
